St Leonard's Church, Seaford

Memorial Inscriptions

"Section S"

The memorials at St Leonard's were first recorded by Seaford resident and Bailiff Henry Simmons (1815-1903 - A28). They were published by the Sussex Archeological Society in Vol XII of "Sussex Archeological Collections" (1860). A number of memorials he recorded have either disappeared altogether or become near-illegible. We have used his details to correct our readings (mainly in respect of dates and ages) as they would have been fresher to his eye. The lists below are the details for graves we did not find; as we cannot place them with precision they are included here.

Henry rarely transcribed complete inscriptions, restricting himself to the essential details. Nor did he include a plan, but grouped details under the headings "North of the Church", "North-East of the Church", "East of the Church", "South of the Church" and "South-East of the Church". The memorials below are arranged alphabetically by area.
